Synagogue Restoration and Expansion

VVA provided extensive project management services for the Ramaz School and Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun (KJ) Synagogue on Manhattan’s Upper East Side following a devastating fire in July 2011.

The fire destroyed the synagogue’s roof, stained glass windows, and recent renovations, while also causing significant water damage to the adjoining school.

Disaster Recovery & Immediate Response

VVA played a critical role in assembling and managing a remediation team, coordinating efforts with:

  • NYC Emergency Response Team and relevant city agencies
  • Insurance carriers and legal teams
  • Disaster recovery vendors, ensuring an efficient and structured response

Expansion & Reconstruction

Following the recovery phase, VVA led the multi-phased renovation and expansion project, which included:

  • A new three-story addition to accommodate both the synagogue and school
  • Core and shell reconstruction, including new foundations and structural reinforcements
  • Upgraded utilities, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire safety infrastructure
  • Sanctuary enhancements, featuring new balconies, stained glass restoration, and specialty plaster finishes
  • New interior program spaces, designed to support the evolving needs of the congregation and school

Outcome

VVA successfully guided the project from disaster response through full reconstruction, delivering a modernized, expanded, and restored space that honors the synagogue’s legacy while supporting its future.
